Digital Video Tutorial - Shoot Scheduling

Production Schedule
Overall Plan to organize the whole schedule - the shoot, editing , distribution etc.

The shoot
  1. Coverage. Use all the available angles. Watch for jump cuts ! Make sure each succeeding shot is more than 45 degrees from the last.
  2. Multiple takes. Do a number of takes for each shot until you are satisfied.
  3. Shoot long . Leave extra 5-20 seconds recorded before and after each shot.
Planning the shoot
  1. Storyboard all the shots needed.
  2. Script breakdown. Create a list of needed shots, put into MS Excel (or similar spreadsheet) if you can. Then you can sort by location , scene, actors, etc.
  3. Write down all the scenes and number the shots you will need in each scene.
  4. List locations, sets, props, equipment, actors for each shot.
  5. special needs. Are there any special lights ? legal clearance eg.
  6. Rehearse First. Make sure the actors learn their lines and shoot rehearsals.

Shooting Schedule

  1. Sort into locations
  2. Arrange so that people needs will be maximized. Do the shots that all crew are needed for first and send the rest that are not needed home after that.
  3. Equipment. If rented gear is used(eg steadycam, shotgun mike) , organize shots to be done on one day.
Location Scouting
Take a camera, and some crew to ascertain aesthetic and technical problems. Take notes and consult crew. Is there a power point available ? what is the lighting like ?
Equipment
Take 2 of everything! Remember Murphy's Law "If something can go wrong it will !" Camera, accessories, batteries, charger, tripod. Lights, reflector, stands, mics, mixer, spare cables, connectors, extension electrical cords, power boards, 2 tapes.

Sets, Props, Costumes
Make sure they are all ready beforehand.
